A lot has happened to me the last many months.
I started university, as well as a new job. I had to focus on my studies so that meant even my fiction writing has taken a crazy hit.
Well, this is not exactly new content. I thought it might be fun to post the writing I’ve been doing for my genre class. We looked at a different genre every week and I had a lot of fun experimenting.
The first week we were given free reign, so I naturally went with something a bit more gritty and fantastical. I wanted to try something new of course, so I went with urban fantasy.

There was a violent crack as lightning split the sky. The street lights flickered and sputtered under the buffeting storm. Under the cover of night, the creature stalked again. Throughout the alley streets of downtown a scream could be heard, piercing louder than the wind.
William awoke, sweat beaded upon his brow and lining his back. The city was calm, the night sky was clear, and the silence was complete. There was no creature, it had been only a nightmare.
The next few days went by like clockwork. There was a perculiar wind scouring the city, but William was from up north. He was used to the cold. Except for the fact that he would flinch when a gust caught him in the ear, or hesitate before setting down any particularly narrow alley.
The whole week went by in this twilight limbo. It was as if the whole city was holding its breath, bated under a grey sky which appeared to have no intention of leaving. The clouds would billow and puff up like they were great sacs of sickly skin, shifting but never coming apart.
He began to think about calling in sick to his bartending job for a for days just to drive out of the city for a change. His hopes were dashed when he turned on his phone late one evening to see a ‘Severe Weather Warning’ notification come across his eyes. He settled for popcorn and a movie instead of a weekend getaway.
As he fell asleep sinking deeper into his jungle-green velvet couch, he heard the light patter as the rain began to streak down his apartment window. It was only when the first crack of thunder rumbled through his floor did his mind turn back to his dream.
Like a broken clock his mind played and replayed the vivid scenes inside his sluggish mind. Before he even glanced to the window, he could hear how heavy the downpour was now. It whipped across the sill in a violent spray, and the sky could never agree on which colour it wanted to be.
He felt again the same sweat coating the back of his spine. There was another thunderous roar, but now William thought he heard, or imagined he heard a scream concurrent with the sound.
Without a second thought, he rushed out of his apartment door. With gritted teeth and shallow breath, he braced himself against the storm. Seeing only the rain licking his face, his feet stepping one by one in front of the other, and the face of a beast in every lurking corner.
I hope you enjoyed. I’ll probably come back to post the next one within a week or two!
