A Snippet of Sci-fi

This one is all about the ‘what ifs’ and letting extrapolation take the reigns. I do have a fondness for sci-fi, especially when it strays into the macabre.

I decidedly skipped sharing my fantasy snippet and opted for this one because the week that I wrote that piece I was not feeling creatively inclined. I feel a never-ending pressure to write my novel but when it comes to imagine different fantasy, it falls flat.

That’s okay, it’s an interesting feeling nonetheless to want to create something so specific and real to myself.

I saw my father’s body today.

He was washed and dressed far cleaner than he’d ever been in his old life. Instead of lining up for the ramen food stall like he usually would, he was waiting in line for a new ‘synthetic-bar’ to open.

He stood there like a statue, only occasionally reentering his body to move up into the line. Even when I darted between him and the person in front of him, he did not recognise me. When I glanced up into his face I thought I saw a flicker of recognition, but then I noticed the thin film contacts that covered his pupils.

The person behind the eyes was not truly there. I turned away. And even if they had been, my father would not have been behind those eyes. They were the eyes of a stranger who would never gaze at me as my father might. It was the same stranger that offered to buy my father’s body so my mother and I could live in an honest apartment instead of a share-zone.

In case you were wondering, I based this excerpt off the question: what if humans could sell their bodies to the rich?

This of course brought to mind many other questions or ideas.

If a rich person could just buy a new body whenever, then there would be nothing stopping them from misusing and ruining their original vessel. And if this was a last resort, would lower middle class people start being overly precautious of their health?

I had fun with this one although I know it is a bit shorter.

Please feel free to go check out my other excerpts. It means more than you know.
