First Blog! Excerpt Time

My first blog post, after an awfully long time setting up this website. Feeling quite proud of myself. It’ll have to be a nice little excerpt from a few weeks ago.

“When the ancient prophet Kophistome, known commonly now as Ko, put down his paint brush for the last time, there shot from the horizon a single ray of the sinking sun. It was then that The Great Work was complete and the paint stiffened in that final light of the day. He breathed a mighty sigh and watched as the light passed through his earthly body. None of his followers glimpsed The Great Work before the blaze struck. In moments the piece was a scorching fire, pure white as a star. From behind the flames came Ko, now extending his ten arms and hands. There, behind the fire he climbed along the single rope of light, and disappeared with the sun as it dipped under the land.

The fire remained for five years and each follower of Ko that pilgrimed to bask in its divinity came away seeing the vision of how the prophet had departed. They also knew the truth of his divinity and knew chiefly they must spread this good news. In time his works of architecture and engineering, of dedicated artistry, and written philosophies became known to us. This was the birth of The Order.

It was Ko that led us from then on. By his grace, civility is ours. By his knowledge, we are guided. By his strength, we strive to complete The Great Work.”

— Holy Scriptures of Ko, read on the coronation of The Third Hierophant by Cleric Sioc.

I really did have fun writing this one. Each time I did reach into my mind to pull out some odd bit of lore, I found it came easier and easier . This sort of exercise is something I’ve struggled with. But the context of a worldbuilding has changed the switch in my brain. I can wrap my head around a short ‘story’ as a way to explore a wider world, but put me in a room and tell me to write a short story and I’ll fall flat. Oh well, I’ve figured something out. That’s something to be grateful for.
